Pathology in Australia - Pathologist jobs Australia

Australia has a large number of vacancies for Anatomical pathologists (Histopathologists) and occasional vacancies for microbiologists, immunologists, haematologists and chemical pathologists.

Overseas Pathologists looking to work in Pathology in Australia need to complete the following pathway:

  1. Obtain a position in an Area of Need

  2. Apply to the Australian Medical Council to obtain recognition of their primary medical degree

  3. Apply to the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia (RCPA) to obtain recognition of their qualifications as being recognised as equivalent to the FRCPA

  4. Obtain medical registration with the medical board in the state that they have obtained a position in after confirmation of being  recognised as a specialist Pathologist by RCPA

  5. Obtain a Provider Number to access Medicare benefits and bill private health funds

  6. Obtain a Sponsored Work Visa allowing you to work in that particular hospital

  7. Organize relocation and accommodation and travel

Pathology Consultants in Australia are remunerated at approximately AUD$150,000 to $250,000 per year.

All overseas candidates are assessed on an individual basis by the college of Pathology (RCPA) but qualifications which have been deemed equivalent in the past include:

UK/ EIRE FRCPath , MRCPath (Fellowship or Membership of the Royal College of Pathology) Accompanied by the Certificate of Accreditation in Pathology from the Joint Committee of Higher Medical Training in the United Kingdom or UK Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST)
USA Certificate of the American Board of Pathology
Canada Certificate in General Pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
OR
Fellowship in Anatomical Pathology, General Pathology, Neuropathology or Haematological Pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Australia/ NZ Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia
