Surgery in Australia - Surgeon jobs Australia

Australia has a number of vacancies for general and orthopaedic surgeons and less vacancies for urologists, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons and neurosurgeons.

Overseas Surgeons looking to work in Surgery in Australia need to complete the following pathway:

1. Obtain a position in an Area of Need

2. Apply to the Australian Medical Council to obtain recognition of their primary medical degree

3. Apply to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) to obtain recognition of their qualifications as being recognised as equivalent to the FRACS

4. Obtain medical registration with the medical board in the state that they have obtained a position in after confirmation of being  recognised as a specialist Surgeon by RACS

5. Obtain a Provider Number to access Medicare benefits and bill private health funds

6. Obtain a Sponsored Work Visa allowing you to work in that particular hospital

7. Organize relocation and accommodation and travel

Surgeons in Australia are remunerated at approximately AUD$200,000 to $300,000 per year for a public hospital position and up to AUD$500,000 if there is a significant private component.

All overseas candidates are assessed on an individual basis by the college of Surgery (RACS) but qualifications which have been deemed equivalent in the past include:

UK/ EIRE	FRCS (England, Ireland, Edinburgh or Glasgow) plus Certificate of Accreditation from the joint Committee of Higher Surgical Training in the UK or UK Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training
USA	Certificate of the American Board of Surgery Certificate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery Certificate of the American Board of Paediatric Surgery  Certificate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery  Certificate of the American Board of Urology Certificate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
Canada	Fellowship in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurology, Plastic Surgery or Urology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Sth Africa	Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa
Australia/ NZ	FRACS (Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons)
